Student Life

Diversity Activities

The AVC/Dean of Students organizational unit is a family of departments which share the goal of providing programs, services and activities that facilitate and enhance the intellectual, personal, social and ethical success and development of students and enhance campus life. The organizational unit includes eight departments that focus on education, support and advocacy for women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students, international students, and students of color (African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Chicano/Latino, Native American).  Links to websites for each of these programs which include mission statement, programs and services, and calendar of events can be accessed through the AVC/DOS webpage http://deanofstudents.ucr.edu/. On a quarterly basis cultural events are highlighted in a Cultural Events calendar coordinated through the office of the AVC/DOS.

AVC/Dean of Students departments strive to ensure that all searches for staff and student positions are addressed proactively to ensure a diverse pool of applicants and a diverse professional and paraprofessional work force.

AVC/Dean of Students departments include diversity as a central component of training and professional development activities for professional and paraprofessional staff.

New student orientation programs (Bear Facts, Bear Tracks, and International Student orientation) include workshops and sessions focused on diversity issues and community standards.

AVC/Dean of Students departments maintain Hate/Bias webpages and play a leadership role in Hate/Bias ensuring that students have clear avenues to report incidents and that there is an institutional response to incidents as appropriate.

Future Diversity Activities

AVC/Dean of Students departments are currently working to develop what we hope will be an annual student leadership retreat focused on prejudice reduction, conflict de-escalation and critical incident management.  The AVC/DOS organizational unit is additional in consultation with the Vice Provost for Conflict Resolution and several faculty to develop a course with the same focus.
