Computing and Communications

Mission Statement

Computing and Communications (C&C) is committed to UCR’s vision for diversity among campus faculty, staff, and students. C&C takes this responsibility very seriously, especially since many technical/programming job titles have historically been under-represented nationwide in terms of women and minority placements.  In support of diversity at UCR, C&C proactively takes steps to create diverse recruitment pools, hires and nurtures interns from UCR’ s diverse undergraduate student body (that in turn leads to career hires and diverse recruitment pools), and supports an environment of collegiality, collaboration, and mutual respect encouraging employee development and retention within a diverse workforce.

Diversity Activities

C&C believes UCR’s diverse undergraduate student body is a wonderful source of high-quality technical talent, and C&C thus has a very active student intern / development program from which career hires are often made.  In recent years, this strategy has resulted in several hires supporting UCR’s and C&C’s diversity goals: specifically, African American, Latino, and female hires in the areas of application/database development and network engineering.

C&C ensures that virtually all recruitments are widely advertised in major metropolitan newspapers to encourage large, diverse recruitment pools.

C&C has a very diverse pool of technical employees; C&C ensures that this diversity is reflected on its Search Committees that in turn encourages diversity in new hires.

C&C sponsors several social events, team building exercises, planning retreats, etc. promoting collegiality and collaboration within its diverse workforce with the goal of limiting turnover and enhancing retention and satisfaction.

C&C has active employee training / workforce development programs aimed at limiting turnover and enhancing retention and satisfaction.

By policy, the AVC reviews and signs all new hire offers and reviews the impact on C&C’s workforce diversity prior to any final decisions.

Future Diversity Activities

C&C believes UCR’s diverse undergraduate student body is a wonderful source of high-quality technical talent.  C&C is therefore creating an internal “Student Job Agency” that will facilitate C&C hiring of interns and student employees.  This C&C “Student Job Agency” will help create pools of diverse, trained, and qualified applicants for C&C career positions.

C&C will be implementing a more formal diversity review of applications for new positions (while a current process exists, it is somewhat informal in nature).

C&C will take steps to more formally encourage its existing diverse workforce to suggest / refer candidates for open positions (especially the most technical positions).
