Riverside, Ca--KUCR 88.3fm, the campus student radio station of UC Riverside, will be the media sponsor for the Sultans of Satire: Middle Eastern Comic Relief at UC Riverside’s University Theatre in an Inland Empire debut performance on Sunday Dec. 2, 2007 at 7:30pm (doors open at 7pm). Subtitled "Middle Eastern comedians on a mission—peace through laughter," the Sultans' show consists of a group of young American comedians of Arab, Iranian, Sephardic Jewish, Armenian, Turkish and Greek heritage, in uproarious sets of stand-up comedy.
This comic ensemble has performed together as the "Sultans of Satire" since November 2005 in shows throughout Southern California, and have garnered wide acclaim. The Sultans had an eight-month run at the World Famous Laugh Factory on Hollywood's Sunset Strip and earlier this year sold out 1,200 seats at USC. In its co-sponsorship, KUCR's Issues and Dialog program is working with the show's producer, the Levantine Cultural Center, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization which promotes understanding and peace in the Middle East through the literary, visual and performing arts.
As the Los Angeles Times said, the Sultans of Satire shows appeal to "Americans who hear a lot about the Middle East, but primarily from the perspective of conflict, terrorism and strife. [Yet] these are also cultures that are very rich and diverse, as in the United States, and the situational humor that comes out of this is very universal. They're laughing at themselves." And, as Ronnie Khalil said to the Daily Pilot of Orange County, "The show is so great because you have all these different cultures, each with their own sense of humor, and they're breaking barriers and getting the message across that everybody can get along." The comedy is fresh, funny, ribald and raucous -- and definitely for a college-age and above audience. College students will totally relate to the cutting-edge humor of the Sultans of Satire.
“Bringing this show to Riverside has been our objective for some time,” says creator Jordan Elgrably, who serves as the artistic director of Levantine Cultural Center. “There is a growing Middle Eastern presence throughout the Inland Empire, with immigrants from Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and other countries of the Levant. In fact, there are more than a million immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa in Southern California. Since the events of 9/11, it has increasingly been our mission to bring together communities whose cultures seem in conflict, as a way to build bridges between them. We're happy to find partners like KUCR in the Inland Empire.”
Comedians Mike Batayeh, Peter Shahriari, Noel Elgrably, Elham Jazab, Ara Basil and Angelo Tsarouchas will be featured in the Dec. 2 performance, with an emerging comedian spot devoted to Shereen Faltas, an Egyptian American. UC Riverside has recently become a noted center for authoritative knowledge, insight and analysis on the Middle East. This fall UC Riverside brought in seven scholars who specialize on the Middle East and Islam. UCR’s new faculty, which includes Reza Aslan, Laila Lalami, Jeffrey Sacks, Susan Ossman, Muhamad Ali, Sherine Hafez and Ebru Erdem, bring insights into many aspects of the Middle East, including the Iraq war, Arab identity, Islamic feminism and an Islamic reformation. “These faculty have expertise in literature, politics, religious studies, women's studies, media and creative writing,” said Stephen Cullenberg, dean of UCR’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. “With the major political and cultural issues of our day, and for the foreseeable future, shaped by global and religious forces in these areas, it is very important to develop scholarly expertise, including language skills, for our students and faculty alike,” he said. UCR Professors Resa Aslan and Laila Lalami are both members of the Levantine Board of Directors and helped make the Sultans of Satire at UCR a reality.
"KUCR is pleased to participate with the Levantine Center in helping to present this at UCR," said Louis Vandenberg, KUCR 88.3fm General Manager. "This is the mission of our 'Issues and Dialog' series-- to stimulate critical, creative and constructive thought about the world. In its way, the Sultans of Satire comedy show achieves that. One of the best ways to make people think, to bring people together, to recognize our common humanity and see past our differences, is through laughter. There's something about humor that breaks down our conscious barriers. We laugh because we recognize truth." Vandenberg added, "this unique group of comics features members of all the religions of the Middle East -- Islam, Judaism, Christianity and Bahai. What we have here is a truly fresh approach--laughing for peace."
The Levantine Cultural Center intends to present several new programs of Middle Eastern culture in the Inland Empire during 2008. Founded in 2001, the Levantine Center has become a highly visible and prolific pan-cultural arts project for Middle Eastern cultures, producing numerous groundbreaking performances and lectures. This show is brought to UC Riverside with support from the Riverside Arts Council and the Riverside County Library System. KUCR 88.3FM, of the University of California at Riverside, is a media sponsor.
