UC Riverside is actively planning a medical school that will serve the health needs of the Inland Empire, while concurrently taking the campus to new heights. To help meet the region's urgent need for doctors, the University submitted in May 2006 a proposal to University of California officials for a medical school. In November of the same year, the UC Regents authorized the campus to proceed with its plans.
A medical school, if approved, would not only provide a tremendous opportunity for serving the health care needs of an underserved region and populace, but it would also help transform the Inland Empire into a knowledge-driven economy. In partnership with community medical centers, hospitals and schools, a research-based medical school would enable the University to draw start-up companies and venture capital to the area. Equally as important is UCR's diverse undergraduate population would provide a pipeline for diversifying the physician workforce.
With UCR's existing UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences and the many faculty already in related fields - such as genomics, nanoscience, and public health - the University has a strong foundation upon which to build a medical megalopolis.

Along with various campus and community advisory groups, the academic rubric for the School of Medicine is being developed with the assistance of a Board of Visitors for Advising on the Academic Design of the School of Medicine, appointed in February 2006.
