Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is an honor to serve as UCR’s leader during this period of transition. My wife Kathleen and I are delighted to join the UCR community and to be active citizens of Riverside and Inland Southern California. I recently spent 18 months here as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor for Health Affairs, coordinating development of the preliminary proposal for the UCR school of medicine. So when the president of the University asked if I would consider the position of acting chancellor, I readily agreed. Not only was I familiar with the campus, but I liked the people, the place, and especially the supportiveness that I experienced during my time here. Once Kathleen visited Riverside with me, we both agreed that it just felt like the right thing for us to do; so the decision was easy.
UCR is blessed with tremendously supportive civic and community leaders who see the university as a partner in the region’s economic, cultural, educational, and social development. Previous chancellors have laid a foundation of cooperation with the region, and I look forward to building on that tradition.
I have been asked about my priorities for UCR. While the school of medicine will remain a high priority, UCR boasts many other important initiatives, and I intend to be a champion of all these programs. My role is to sustain UCR’s impressive momentum and not merely serve as a caretaker. As I mentioned in my opening remarks to the campus community, I am going to get up every morning thinking about how I can use that day to move the campus forward.
Thank you all for your warm welcome. With your help and continued support the year ahead will be productive, exciting and rewarding.
Cordially,
Robert D. Grey
Acting Chancellor
University of California, Riverside
