Diversity in the Academy:
A Campus/Community Summit
University Extension, Rooms D& E
March 11, 2005
Purpose
The purpose of the faculty forum, “Diversity In he Academy: A Campus/Community Summit,” was to further UCR’s strategic goals of building a more diverse faculty to reflect the face of California and the nation, mentoring our diverse undergraduate student population, and enriching the academy with varied perspectives and innovations. The summit was designed to highlight the challenges we face in increasing the number of women and underrepresented minorities in the academy, including (1) enlarging the academic pipeline, (2) attracting a diverse faculty pool, and (3) fostering an environment in which all faculty can succeed. As much as anything, it offered an opportunity for faculty, administrators, and community leaders to discuss strategies to meet challenges and develop a blueprint for action.
